If you’re looking for a quintessential Munich experience, Altstadt is one of the best areas to stay. Located in the heart of the city, this medieval district is home to some of the best traditional beer taverns, shopping opportunities, and historical sites in the city.

It was surrounded by a grand stone wall back in the late 12th century and while much of it was destroyed in previous centuries, you can still see three of the remaining gates which have embedded themselves into the character of the city.

Altstadt is one of the oldest parts of Munich, and it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular destination for tourists. From the charming cobblestone streets to the beautiful architecture, there’s plenty to see and explore in this district.

In addition, because it’s located in the city center, everything is within walking distance – including endless historical sites and world-renowned gastronomic destinations.

Travel Tips for Visiting Munich in December

Munich in December can be a beautiful and festive time to visit – if you come prepared! Here are the best tips to make your trip go smoothly.

First, ❄️ always have a backup plan for inclement weather. December is known for rain and snow in Munich, so have a museum or indoor activity in mind if your outdoor plans fall through.

Next, ❄️ dress warm and bring plenty of layers. The temperature can drop to below freezing during this time of year, so be prepared with hats, gloves, and a warm jacket. Don’t forget your waterproof boots either!

Also, if you plan on shopping at the Christmas markets, ❄️ come prepared with cash. Many stalls do accept cards but it’s always good to have cash on hand, especially for tipping at the numerous pubs Munich has to offer.

And finally, ❄️ don’t come expecting Oktoberfest. This iconic festival ends in early October and no, there won’t be any leftover beer steins or tents set up in December.

There are so many fun things to do in Munich during December, just make sure to come prepared!

How to Get Around Munich in December

Red trains driving over snowy train tracks

If you’re planning on traversing the city of Munich after those cold winter months hit (Berlin and most other German cities will be in the same boat), you’ll want to have a backup plan in mind in case something holds you up (snow, icy roads, icy train tracks, you name it!)

While I usually recommend taking advantage of public transportation when arriving and departing from, as well as getting around Munich, road trips around Germany are honestly the way to go if you want to explore the smaller towns of Bavaria and all over the country.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, be sure to book your rental car for Munich in advance since they book up fast (especially around the holidays!)

Most hotels that I’ve included in this list include free parking or have paid parking areas very close by, so this shouldn’t be much of an issue if you do decide to rent a car.

But, let’s say that your ‘winter wonderland in Germany‘ dream comes true and it starts snowing. Well, you can’t guarantee that public transportation will always run on time during those wintery months, or even at all (it’s happened to me before!).

So, my advice is to book a hotel that’s centrally located and within walking distance to some of the main attractions in Munich. This way, if the weather doesn’t permit you to take public transportation or drive, you can easily walk from place to place.

But, if you want to experience European train travel on your winter visit to Munich, I can’t blame you… it’s truly a magical experience!

What To Pack for Munich in December

Munich in December can get very cold, so it’s important to pack warm clothes. Even though the forecast may be sunshine and clear skies, the temperature at night often drops below freezing.

So, here are some things to consider packing for your trip!

  • a womens or men’s swimsuit as there are some indoor pools and hot tubs
  • This 2 piece tummy-control bathing suit is gorgeous and flattering! Plus it comes in 40 different styles and colors
  • Quiksilver has some pretty awesome men’s bathing suits, plus this one comes in over a dozen different colors

  • sunscreen (I usually pack this facial sunscreen if I’m going to be all bundled up – it’s non-oily and good for both men and women) – Plus, it’s 3 ounces so you can bring it in your carry-on on your trip to Munich this December!

  • a filtering, reusable water bottle (water in Munich is more expensive than beer and this LifeStraw Bottle has changed my life)

  • a camera or portable phone charger so you can charge your camera phone on the go
  • I’ve been using this same portable charger for over 5 years and it’s still working great – enough said.

  • snacks (food in Munich can get expensive)
  • If you like RX Bars like I do, these are a great and healthy high-protein option when you’re on the go! But, I do understand the popular opinion of them sticking in your teeth, so if you’re not a fan, then there are a bunch of other great protein bar options, as well!

Things To Do in Munich in December

Munich is a stunning city to visit in December. The Christmas markets are a must-see (even if you don’t celebrate the holiday, they’re beautiful nevertheless), as is ice skating on the numerous manmade rinks around the city.

Plus, there’s truly nothing better than soaking up all of the festive atmosphere! There’s also plenty of good food and drink to enjoy, so you can create your very own DIY food and drink tour if you please!

Not to mention there are some amazing shopping opportunities around the city, though you may need to do some window shopping first to find the best deals as many prices skyrocket during the first week of December and last through the holiday season.

Also, if you love photography like I do, the snow-dusted landmarks make for some amazing shots if you’re lucky enough to see Munich with a blanket of snow!

It’s on the rarer occasion that you will experience snow if you’re visiting Munich in December, especially if you’re only there for a short amount of time.

While snow does happen on occasion, it’s usually not enough to affect travel plans or outdoor activities and you’ll just notice a light flurry. However, it’s always good to pack a coat and layers just in case!

In December, Munich experiences mostly chilly temperatures ranging between 27-40 degrees Fahrenheit (-2-4 degrees Celsius).

Cloud coverage is pretty much constant and you can expect to see some wet or slushy days while walking around the city.

Come mid-December, the mornings are below freezing, but the afternoons start to warm up into the mid to high 30s.

According to Weatherspark, Munich rarely receives below 2.2 inches of snow or above 7.7 inches of snow over the 31-day period. So, it isn’t impossible to get snow, it’s just unlikely that it will be a lot at any one time.
