In this section, I’ve compiled some answers to important questions regarding your trip to Luxembourg including if it’s worth visiting in winter, how many days you need there, if it’s affordable, and more!

Is Luxembourg Expensive to Visit?

Luxembourg can be considered expensive to visit, but it’s quite comparable to its neighboring countries in Western Europe. Accommodations and dining can be pricey, but there are also budget-friendly options available.

We were able to find a decent, 3-star hotel in the city center for about $125 USD per night, so depending on your personal budget, this may or may not be considered expensive.

Plus, many museums and attractions offer free admission or discounts for students or seniors!

Is Luxembourg Worth Visiting in December?

While we visited Luxembourg in the spring, we’ve heard from many travelers that it’s absolutely beautiful in December! The city is known for its Christmas markets and festive decorations, making it a popular destination during the holiday season.

Plus, if you’re a fan of winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, Luxembourg has some great options for outdoor activities.

You can also find great deals on flights and accommodations in the off-season, and you won’t have to wait in the typical tourist lines at each attraction!

What is the Best Time to Visit Luxembourg?

The best time to visit Luxembourg typically falls in late spring (May to June) which is our favorite time and early autumn (September to October).

During these periods, the weather is mild and pleasant making it ideal for walking around the Bock Casemates or exploring the Grand Ducal Palace!

Springtime showcases blooming flowers and lush greenery, while autumn offers vibrant foliage and a cozy aura throughout the city. Summer (July to August) is often very busy with tourists, but events and festivals like Schueberfouer take place throughout this season.

Winter months provide a unique experience with holiday festivities but are colder and often have fewer tourist opportunities. Ultimately, the best time to visit Luxembourg depends on your personal preferences for climate and activities.

How Many Days Do You Need in Luxembourg?

Despite the country being one of the smallest in Europe, there’s enough to see and do in Luxembourg for at least 4-5 days!

You could even spend longer depending on how much time you want to spend in each major region, but this is pretty typical for most tourists before they move on to a nearby country.

As for a classic itinerary, you could spend 1-2 days in Luxembourg City which would give you enough time to visit the main attractions and taste some of the local food.

Then, you could spend 2-3 days hiking in the Mullerthal Region if you want to tackle part or all of a route across the countryside through small villages. Of course, there are plenty of single day hikes, as well.

You could finish up in some small wine towns like Remich, Grevenmacher, or Schengen along the Moselle River which are great for winding down and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere before departing for elsewhere in Europe.

Overall, we suggest a minimum of 4-5 days in Luxembourg, but you could spend anywhere from 2-10 days in the country quite easily!

Why Would Someone Visit Luxembourg?

Tourists are drawn to Luxembourg not only for its unique distinction as the world’s last Grand Duchy but also for its historic ruins, stunning countryside, and rich cultural blend from neighboring countries.

The capital city, with its UNESCO status, draws many for its architectural beauty and unique Old Town. The charming countryside provides opportunities for outdoor activities and wine tourism, appealing to nature and food enthusiasts alike.

Furthermore, Luxembourg’s strategic location makes it a convenient base for day trips to neighboring countries! Its unique blend of cultures and languages also adds to the visitor experience. The overall accessibility and welcoming atmosphere make it an enticing destination for many.

Is Luxembourg Worth Visiting With Kids?

Vianden Castle in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is one of the best places to visit in Europe with kids!

There are beautiful hiking regions with different trails of all skill levels, stunning cities with great food options (even for picky eaters), and the public transportation makes it super easy to get around with young ones.

Plus, the country as a whole is incredibly safe and you’ll just want to exercise normal precautions as you would anywhere which I outline in my free guide to traveling Europe safely.

What are Some of the Top Things To Do in Luxembourg City?

In Luxembourg City, visitors can explore numerous attractions including the Bock Casemates which are a network of underground tunnels from WWII, the Grand Ducal Palace which offers guided tours that dive into the country’s monarchy, and the city’s picturesque old town, which is filled with cafes, authentic souvenir shops and invites leisurely strolls.

The National Museum of History and Art is a popular choice amongst enthusiasts, while the Chemin de la Corniche and the Three Towers Monument offer amazing panoramic views of the city and the Bock Casemates from a stunning angle!

Is Luxembourg Safe?

Violent crime is quite low in Luxembourg as is the risk of pickpocketing (the primary concern for most tourists visiting Europe) when compared to the rest of the continent.

We found it to be incredibly safe when we visited, with no fear of walking around after dark, down dead-end streets in the cities, and so forth.

Furthermore, Luxembourg has been given a Level 1 – Exercise Normal Precautions rating (the lowest crime rating by the U.S. Department of State) since mid-July of 2024 which gives us no reason to suspect any dangers in visiting, but it’s always best to check your local government website before making travel plans.

We thoroughly believe, however, that even if you’re visiting Luxembourg for the first time, you’re likely to have a great experience!

Overall, visiting Luxembourg offers a unique and diverse experience for travelers! Whether you’re interested in exploring historic sites, indulging in delicious cuisine, or immersing yourself in nature, Luxembourg is absolutely worth visiting.
