What is the National Game of England? Football or Cricket?
What is the national game of England? Is it cricket or football? With hundreds of thousands of fans showing up to association football games left and right and cricket being a little more, well, refined, the answer may surprise you.
I recently attended a Premier League match between West Ham United and Arsenal in London and was so excited to have the opportunity to experience British passion for sports firsthand!
But, turns out, despite the undeniable excitement for football by fans from around the world, cricket is actually England’s national game.
In this post, I’m going to break down how England’s national game came to be and why people from across the United Kingdom don’t necessarily agree with the choice.
What is England’s National Sport Cricket or Football?

England’s national game is cricket, not football. Though, if you visit the United Kingdom (particularly London where football fan gangs run rampant) you may hear otherwise from the general public.
While cricket was immensely popular during the 19th and 20th centuries, its prevalence has dropped in recent decades to make way for Association Football, also known as soccer in different regions of the world (mainly the United States).
That being said, countries all over the world play cricket together under the rules and regulations of the ICC (International Cricket Council) which is one of the primary governing bodies of the sport.
Today, football fans across the UK are passionate about their teams and have made it a part of their culture, but cricket still remains the national game by official declaration.
