If you only have one day to spare, then a day trip to Cork is absolutely worth it, but I’d say 2-3 days would be ideal.

But, if you want to spend a night in each of these major areas and explore the hip and trendy neighborhoods of Cork’s city center, then 4 or 5 nights is more likely a good fit for you!

Is Cork City Rough?

Cork City is a very safe place to explore. In fact, it actually has significantly lower crime rates than that of Dublin and Limerick and is generally safe to wander around even at night. That being said, however, it does have its rougher parts just like any city.

While it is generally safe, I wouldn’t suggest roaming the streets at night alone or doing anything you wouldn’t normally do in any European city. Some lower-income areas that typically get a bad rap are Knocknaheeny, Mayfield, and Mahon as well as the Ballinderry Park.

These areas are all located on the northern side of the city, which is where crime rates are usually higher than on the southern side where the majority of the wealthy people in the city reside.

Overall, the city of Cork is very safe and the biggest issue you may come across is disorderly drunkenness on any given night.

So, if you’re traveling with kids and would prefer to avoid any of these circumstances, then I suggest staying closer to Blarney or in one of the neighborhoods on the south side of the city.
