What better place to ring in the New Year than one of the world’s most vibrant cities? London lights up for the holidays, with fireworks exploding over the Thames and massive street parties throughout the city.
Best of all, nearly all of these festivities are free to attend! Head to the Southbank for a night filled with music and entertainment, or watch the fireworks from the iconic London Eye.
London is also full of manmade ice skating rinks perfect for taking a whirl on and most Christmas markets are still in full swing through the first week of January, making it the ultimate winter destination.

If you mention the term “Brussels” to most people, the first thing they’ll think of is sprouts… but it’s also a fantastic destination for New Year’s Eve!

On New Year’s Eve, join the fun at Długi Targ (Long Market), where a massive street party takes place with live music, fireworks, and plenty of food and drinks to go around.
Be sure to try some Polish specialties like pierogi (dumplings) or kiełbasa (sausage) while you’re wandering the Long Market and finish the night with a lovely stroll along the picturesque Motława River to soak in Gdańsk’s old-world charm.

Zurich may not be the first city that comes to mind when thinking of Europe’s best places for New Year’s Eve, but hear me out. This Swiss city offers a mix of old-world charm and modernity, with spectacular views of the snow-capped Alps (perfect for winter holiday getaways!)
On New Year’s Eve, head to Zurich’s iconic Bahnhofstrasse shopping street which transforms into a pedestrian-only party zone complete with live music and fireworks come midnight on December 31st. If you’re looking for a more intimate celebration, check out one of Zurich’s cozy bars or restaurants offering special New Year’s menus and drinks.
Don’t forget to try some Swiss specialties while in Zurich like cheese fondue or rosti (a crispy and fluffy potato pancake), and be sure to bring along some Swiss chocolate as a tasty souvenir or gift to bring back home.

8. Istanbul, Turkey
Did you know that you can easily cross between Europe and Asia in Istanbul? It’s true! The country is located on a continental divide that can easily be crossed on one of three main ferry terminals (Eminonu, Besiktas and Karakoy) to either the Kadikoy or Uskudar terminals on the opposite side of the Haydarpaşa Chornomorsk Channel.
This makes it super easy to explore Turkey’s vibrant and culturally rich city, which also happens to offer a New Year’s Eve celebration like no other. You can head to the historic Sultanahmet Square and join in on the lively street parties complete with Turkish food, drinks, live music, and fireworks at midnight.
Don’t forget to explore Istanbul’s various markets and try some Turkish specialties like baklava (a sweet pastry made of layers of filo dough filled with nuts), kebabs, or döner (meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie).

Located on the southwestern coast of Norway, Bergen is known for its breathtaking fjords (an evening cruise through the fjords would be a sensational way to kick off the new year) and colorful wooden houses in the Bryggen area near the city’s harbor.
It also happens to offer a unique New Year’s celebration complete with outdoor bonfires, fireworks, and live concerts at various locations throughout the city. But, if you’re looking for a more traditional way of celebrating, make some friends along your travels that will invite you into their home (also called a hytte) for a lovely home-cooked meal!
Similar to the way Christmas may be celebrated in North America, Norwegians will put on some lovely outfits and spend time with family over an authentic family meal as they countdown to the new year among loved ones.
If you decide to visit Bergen, don’t miss checking out Mount Floyen (one of the seven mountains surrounding the city) for stunning views of the fjords. You could also opt to take a funicular up the side of the mountain for a more relaxed hike or just to enjoy the scenery.

Most Romantic Places in Europe for New Years
If you’re looking for a cozy spot to romance your loved one, then these are some of the best places to spend New Years in Europe!
10. Lisbon, Portugal
Known for its vibrant music and nightlife scene, Lisbon is a perfect destination for a romantic getaway to ring in the new year. Whether it’s taking a walk along the picturesque riverfront or enjoying a candlelit dinner with Portuguese specialties like codfish cakes and port wine, there are plenty of intimate experiences to be had in this charming city.
Don’t miss catching one of the stunning fireworks displays over the water at Praça do Comércio (perfect for picking up some Portuguese souvenirs) or head to Rossio Square for live music and entertainment leading up to midnight.
And if you want to continue celebrating well into the early hours of the morning, many bars and clubs in Bairro Alto will keep the party going until dawn.
But, if you’re looking for some more romantic places to bring your significant other, then you might want to avoid the iconic Pink Street. Having been there myself on several occasions, it can be really difficult to find a semi-private or quiet place to talk to anyone.
Most of the time, the streets is rowdy and covered in inebriated tourists, so it’s probably not the place you want to be if you’re looking to propose or have a nice evening out.
But, if you’re looking to join the party atmosphere, then I can’t recommend Pink Street enough! And believe it or not, it does snow in different regions of Portugal, so be sure to pack warm if you’re planning on spending the holidays in the capital city or have a winter Portugal itinerary planned.

11. Reykjavik, Iceland
This unique destination offers some unforgettable ways to start the new year with your special someone. Witness amazing fireworks over Reykjavik’s harbor while enjoying drinks at one of the many bars and restaurants located along the waterfront.
Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, head out on a snowmobile tour over a glacier at midnight before stopping to enjoy the fireworks display under a blanket of stars.
But, one of the most popular experiences in Iceland during the winter is catching a glimpse of the northern lights. Head out on a tour (or even rent a car) to find an isolated spot away from city lights for some truly magical moments with your loved one.
We all know Iceland can be expensive, but it’s well worth a splurge for New Years!
↪️ Pro Tip: If you want my advice, head to Grótta Lighthouse which is just an 8-minute car ride from the center of town to spot the auroras!
This spot provides the perfect escape from the city lights and an unforgettable backdrop should the auroras make an appearance, so don’t be surprised if you see a few locals in the area after midnight.
And don’t forget about all of the diverse culinary delights that await you in Reykjavik, from traditional Icelandic dishes like fermented shark (known as Hákarl) to gourmet dining options.
Plus, hot springs are plentiful throughout Iceland – what better way to warm up and relax with your significant other after braving the cold?
Just be sure to pack warm clothing and appropriate gear for exploring this unique destination during the winter months as temperatures can drop to well below freezing without much notice and high winds aren’t uncommon.

12. Prague, Czech Republic
This beautiful city has everything from vibrant culture to incredible cuisine and plenty of holiday cheer to bring in the new year with your significant other.
Stroll through Prague’s cobblestone streets lined with colorful buildings, stopping to admire its stunning architecture – including the famous Astronomical Clock located in Old Town Square.
Or, take a romantic cruise along the Vltava River to admire the city’s stunning views from a different perspective before enjoying a meal at one of Prague’s many restaurants – don’t forget to try some traditional Czech dishes like the traditional Svíčková (eaten primarily around the holidays) or Kolínka!
Trdelník is one of the more popular foods you’ll see around town (and also my personal favorite sweet treat – especially when it’s filled with hazelnut chocolate spread), but the best dinner option you can get (in my opinion) is either the Grilované klobásy (big sausage on a bun with peppers, onions, and mustard) or the Vepřo knedlo zelo (pork loin, sauerkraut, and dumplings in gravy).
When it comes time for the festive countdown, head over to Old Town Square where you can join the crowds and witness the impressive fireworks display over the city’s skyline.
Prague is easily one of the best places in Europe for New Years, but be sure to book your accommodation ahead of time as it’s a popular destination that books up fast!
↪️ Pro Tip: For a truly romantic experience, hike up Petrin Hill with some food and champagne for some of the best views of the fireworks in the city! You won’t be completely alone with this idea, but there will be a lot fewer people than if you were to stay in Wenceslas Square or Old Town Square.

13. Athens, Greece
Greece’s capital city offers the perfect mix of history, culture, and stunning views to kick off the new year with your loved one. Admire the ancient Acropolis lit up at night before heading over to Syntagma Square to join the crowds counting down to midnight.
Try some traditional Greek dishes like Souvlaki or Moussaka, washed down with some delicious local wine. And for those looking for a more unique experience, consider heading to one of Athens’ many rooftop bars where you can enjoy the stunning views of the city skyline while sipping on a cocktail and bringing in the new year in style.
Of course, no trip to Athens would be complete without taking some time to explore the city’s historical sites, including the Acropolis and Parthenon, as well as the Ancient Agora and Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Athens isn’t often considered among the best places in Europe for the New Year, but I include it just for that reason! It’s full of romantic sites that are insanely overrun with tourists in the summer months, but completely overlooked in the winter months!
Greece is known for its stunning islands, with Athens usually being not much more than an arrival and departure point. But, when it comes to celebrating the holidays, you really should consider this amazing historical location! Especially if you want a more mild-weathered holiday or want to be close to warmer destinations…

14. Copenhagen, Denmark
Bring in the new year Danish-style in Copenhagen – a city known for its cozy cafés, historic architecture, and vibrant nightlife. Stroll through the beautiful Nyhavn canal lined with colorful buildings, stopping for a drink or bite to eat at one of the many restaurants and bars.
Don’t forget to try some traditional Danish dishes like Smørrebrød (open-faced, butter-slathered sandwich) or Stegt flæsk (fried pork belly and soft potatoes), washed down with a cold Carlsberg beer (the best in Denmark!).
And for those looking for a more festive atmosphere on New Year’s Eve, head over to City Hall Square where you’ll find live music and entertainment leading up to the big countdown at midnight.
Similar to what Americans do on New Years’ Eve in New York City in Times Square, those who can’t make it to City Hall Square will live-stream all of the action from their very own homes.

15. Budapest, Hungary
Ring in the new year in one of Europe’s most stunning cities – Budapest! Admire the beautiful Parliament building lit up at night before heading over to Vörösmarty Square for a festive celebration complete with live music and entertainment leading up to midnight.
↪️ Pro Tip: There are dozens of riverboats serving up refreshing drinks on the edge of the Danube, but not all of them move!
If you want to get that beautiful photo on a boat on the river with Buda Castle in the background without spending a lot of money on a river cruise, then walk down to the river banks and look for the boats lit up with string lights.
They often have indoor bars perfect for enjoying a drink in peace for making your way back out to the city.
But before you do all that, don’t forget to indulge in some traditional Hungarian cuisine like gulyás (goulash) and lángos (fried dough topped with sour cream and cheese). And of course, wash it all down with a glass of Szentkirályi (mineral water) or Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) red wine.

If you’re looking for a reason to visit Germany this holiday season with your partner, here it is. Take your loved one to party like a true Berliner on New Year’s Eve and spend the night at one of the city’s famous clubs!
But before the countdown, go for a stroll through the beautiful Brandenburg Gate or grab a drink at an outdoor café in Alexanderplatz (this is what you’ll see most of the locals doing).

For those seeking a more intimate celebration, consider booking tickets to one of Berlin’s famous New Year’s Eve concerts or shows like the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra!
You can also have a unique New Year’s Eve experience by checking out one of Berlin’s famous Christmas markets – warm up with some glühwein (hot spiced wine) and browse the handmade crafts, ornaments, and delicious treats on offer (these make for great German souvenirs!)
Often overlooked by the city of Munich, Berlin has so much to offer its visitors and should definitely be considered as one of the best places in Europe to spend New Years.

Spend New Year’s Eve at Santa Claus Village, where you can meet the man himself and participate in various winter activities such as snowmobiling, traditional Sami culture, and even ice fishing. You can even stay on an authentic reindeer farm!
In my opinion, Finland is absolutely one of the best European countries for New Years owing to its romantic winter wonderland landscape and endless opportunities to catch the aurora borealis dancing the night away right above your very own igloo accommodation.
End the night with a bang by watching the fireworks display over the snowy landscapes, or if you’re feeling brave (and have very warm clothes), head out to the nearby Korvatunturi fell to witness tens of thousands of reindeer roaming free through the forests and over the frozen lakes. Talk about getting into the holiday spirit!
When you’re ready for some warmth, head to one of Rovaniemi’s saunas (or rent one of your own) and relax in the steamy heat before heading out to explore more of Lapland’s winter wonderland.

Alright, the section you’ve probably been waiting for… the best places in Europe for New Years with WARM WEATHER! Not all of us love the snow and cold, after all. If you’re looking to avoid toe-biting temperatures and frosty wind chills, then this list below is what you need.
20. Madeira Islands, Portugal – one of the best places for fireworks
The archipelago of Madeira, located off the coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean, offers a mild subtropical climate year-round and is known for its stunning natural beauty – think volcanic islands with lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, exotic flowers, and stunning views of the ocean.
Not to mention, Madeira also holds the Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks display in the world on New Year’s Eve – so it’s definitely a top contender for one of the best places in Europe to ring in the new year with a bang (literally).
Catch the fireworks show over Funchal Bay or head to Ponta de São Lourenço for a more secluded, nature-filled setting to watch the explosions of colors light up the night sky.

Or if you’re looking for something a bit more low-key, spend the evening strolling through the charming streets of Faro or Albufeira, stopping for drinks and tapas at cafes along the way before heading to one of the many bars or clubs for some late-night dancing.
The weather at this time in Algarve averages in the mid-50s Fahrenheit with highs in the upper-60s Fahrenheit, so don’t forget to pack your swimsuit for some beach lounging during the day when the sun will be out!

Head to Ibiza Town or Playa d’en Bossa where you’ll find the famous beach clubs of Ushuaia and Hi Ibiza, and endless trendy beach bars scattering the longest beach on the island.
Or if you’re looking for something a bit more low-key, spend the evening strolling through the charming streets of Sant Antoni de Portmany, stopping for drinks and tapas at cafes along the way before heading to one of the island’s famous clubs for some late-night dancing.

You can also join the Cathedral Ibiza Fun Race where you’ll attempt to conquer the 2,300-meter dash to the peak of the fortified old town of Ibiza, also known as Dalt Vila. This local race is free for anyone to join and is most commonly done in groups where all members where matching costumes!

Don’t miss out on participating in Tenerife’s annual New Year’s tradition where you eat one grape every second for the first 12 seconds of the new year, representing good fortune for every month of the year! You’ll witness locals and tourists alike taking part in the tradition, and it’s certainly something unique to experience.

Spend the evening strolling through the Old Town’s marble streets or enjoying a lovely dinner at the city’s Panorama Restaurant where you get unbeatable views 778 meters above the city streets – the ultimate spot for the midnight countdown in my opinion!
Temperatures during this time of the year can reach the upper-50s Fahrenheit during the day, so it’s a perfect spot to do some sightseeing before checking out some of Dubrovnik’s beautiful beaches for a day of relaxation before the big celebration.
If you’ll be in town, check out Dubrovnik’s Winter Festival which actually concludes on New Years Day with an enchanting ball, plenty of food, and of course… champagne!

But, if I had to pick just a few new years festivals for you to pick from, these are easily the best…

If you’re looking for some special festivals to attend this New Years Eve in Europe, all of these cities will have unique celebrations on offer.
How to Plan Your New Years Eve Trip to Europe
First and foremost, you’ll need to figure out what your goals are. Are you looking for a big city celebration with fireworks and parties? Or do you prefer a quieter, more intimate holiday experience? Do some research on what each destination offers and what their New Year’s Eve traditions are.
Once you decide on a location, you’ll want to start thinking about your budget.
As we all know, the holidays are an expensive time all-around, so if you’re taking your family on a vacation in lieu of the typical gift exchange, keep this in mind when considering how much you want to spend on the vacation.
Between flights, meals, activities, and hotels, things can add up fast.

How To Get Around in Europe on New Years Eve
Many European cities have excellent public transportation options, so if you’re planning on visiting a country capital or any big European city then my first recommendation would be to plan out your route around the area and familiarize yourself with the subway or bus systems.
This can save you the headache of trying to navigate through a foreign city on foot in the cold while also avoiding high taxi fares during peak holiday times.
Another option is to rent a car, especially if you’re visiting multiple small regions or countries during your trip. This can be a great way to keep your itinerary flexible in case you want to stay in a city an extra night or two, and it allows you to visit the smaller towns and villages of Europe that trains and buses take longer to get to.
Just remember to check for any holiday restrictions or closures on roadways and plan accordingly. I personally have never felt the need to rent a car in Europe when traveling between big cities since the European train costs are super affordable and the routes are efficient and reliable.
If you’re simply traveling between Paris and Amsterdam (or any big cities in Europe), then I would highly recommend train travel to be your first resort.
Lastly, if you’re feeling adventurous, consider some alternative options like biking or even walking to your destination (depending on the distance, of course), especially in cities known for their walkability like Brussels or Amsterdam.

But, if you want to escape the colder weather, countries like Spain and Portugal offer milder temperatures during December and can be great if you want a combination of warm weather and European flare!
For me, personally, France is the best country in Europe in December since it has everything from ski resorts to stunning Christmas markets, incredible mountain ranges to indoor spas, as well as hot springs, mulled wine, and tons of comfort food to keep your heart happy in the winter.

If that’s your definition of warm, then you shouldn’t be considering visiting Europe this winter. Instead, check out the Caribbean islands or the upper half of South America.
