If you’re on a trip to a French-speaking country and you’re trying to learn some basic French, I totally get it! Wondering how do you say no in French and what is French for no are common thoughts that many travelers have before visiting France or the like.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to say no in French!
1. No in French – Non
The classic and most standard way of saying “no” in French is to simply say “non.” You’ll hear it before sentences that have been negated and on its own.
Pronounce it by closing your lips at the end of the word and saying these syllables: N-OH-N

2. Nope in French – Nan
A little bit like French slang, the younger generations in France are typically the ones using this word. It’s often to hear it in conversations but you’ll also notice it through texting conversations as well.
Pronounce the word with a soft “n” on the end, almost as if it is an “ah”: N-AH
3. Never in French – Jamais
If you want to use the word never in a sentence, then you would use the word jamais.
For example:
- I am never going to school
- Je ne vais jamais à l’école
- Never again
- Plus jamais
How to Say No Using “Not” in French –
Ne pas
The word “not” is used extremely frequently in all languages. Similar to “no” in French, it is used to negate a sentence or phrase.
For example:
- I am not going to his house
- Je ne vais pas chez lui
Notice how the “ne” and “pas” wrap around the verb to negate the sentence?
- I am going to his house
- Je vais chez lui
Now, see how when the verb is not negated that the “ne” and “pas” are no longer necessary? That’s the power of the word not in French! In the following examples, don’t get confused.
The phrase ne pas is only used to wrap around verbs, and since these sentences are more statements void of any verbs, you won’t see the ne pas usage here.
4. Not at All in French – Pas du tout
If you really don’t like something at all, use the phrase pas du tout.

- Do you like this book?
- Aimez-vous ce livre?
- Not at all!
- Pas du tout!
5. Not Really in French – Pas vraiment
If you don’t really like something, use the phrase pas vraiment.
Example:
- Do you like this movie?
- Aimez-vous ce film?
- Not really
- Pas vraiment
6. Not Yet in French – Pas encore
If you haven’t done something or been somewhere yet but plan to, use the phrase pas encore.

- Have you been to Spain?
- Avez-vous été en Espagne?

7. Not Now in French – Pas maintenant
If someone is asking you to do something or trying to talk to you but you simply don’t have the time or you can’t respond right away, simply say pas maintenant!

8. Not Exactly or Not Quite in French – Pas tout à fait
If you don’t agree with the way someone is describing or doing something you can say, pas tout à fait, which means not exactly or not quite.
Example:
- Do I just walk straight to get to the library?
- Est-ce que je marche tout droit pour aller à la bibliothèque?
- Not quite, you need to take a right
- Pas tout à fait, vous devez prendre à droite

9. Not a Chance in French – Aucune chance
If someone asks you to do something or if you’re alright with something happening but you aren’t, then you can say aucune chance.
Example:
- Can I sleep over Mary’s house?
- Puis-je dormir chez Mary?

Types of “No” in French
10. Surprised No in French – Oh non!
If someone tells you a surprising story or you get startled, then say “Oh!” or “Oh non!” to give the message that you are surprised or taken back.
11. Polite No in French – Non, merci
I always recommend being polite everywhere you travel, even if someone isn’t necessarily being polite to you.
To do this in French, simply say “no, merci” if you don’t want something or want someone to stop what they are doing. Using one of the gestures that I will talk about below is also good for these types of situations.
12. Contradictory No in French – Mais non!
This literally translates to “but no“, but it is more commonly thought of as meaning “of course not“.

13. No Way in French – Des clous
If you want to disagree quickly and without question, use des clous. Another way of saying no way is to say pas question.
Example:
- Do you like the way she is dressed?
- Aimez-vous la façon dont elle est habillée?
- No way!
- Des clous!
14. No, I Don’t – Moi, non
If someone asks if you would be interested in something or accuses you of something you didn’t do, you can say moi, non.
Example:
- Do you paint?
- Peignez-vous?

15. Nay in French – Que nenni
A very old-fashioned way of saying no in French that is very rarely used anymore. You may, on the extremely rare occasion, hear people say this term as a joke, but almost never in a serious conversation.
You hear this form of “no” in spoofs and TV shows set around the 1400s, but definitely not in the early 21st century!
16. Of Course Not in French – Bien sûr que non
To strongly negate someone or disagree, use bien sûr que non.
Example:
- Are you letting him skip school?
- Tu le laisses sécher l’école?
- Of course not!
- Bien sûr que non!
17. It’s not possible in French – C’est pas possible
To say something is not possible, use c’est pas possible.
You can also use “ne” and “pas” here, but it is the longer version of getting the same message across.

19. Absolutely Not in French – Absolument pas
