What are the Numbers 1 to 100 in French?
What is nice about counting in French is that you are continuously going to take what you learned when counting from 1-10 in French, and apply it to every number afterward (just like in English!)
Let me show you what I’m talking about:
If vingt means 20, then vingt et un means 21
👉 I simply took the number 20 and added 1 to it. 20 (vingt) and one (et un) equals 21!
If vingt means 20, then vingt-deux means 22
👉 I took the number 20 (vingt) and added 2 (deux) to it
** You will only include the French word for and (et) with multiples including one (i.e. 21, 31, 41, 51…) **

What are the Numbers 100-1000 in French?
Now that you’ve mastered the basis for counting from 1-10 in French, we can step it up a little bit. You have also had a pretty good introduction to counting from 1-100 in French, but what about from 100 to 1000?
If it seems daunting, don’t worry. To learn how to master counting numbers in French, you’ll simply need to practice frequently.
Just like anything that you want to get good at, it will take time to memorize the numbers and master the pronunciation.
Let’s start with the easy step: counting by one-hundred:
👉 100 = cent
👉 200 = deux cents
👉 300 = trois cents
👉 400 = quatre cents
👉 500 = cinq cents
👉 600 = six cents
👉 700 = sept cents
👉 800 = huit cents
👉 900 = neuf cents
👉 1000 = mille
From here, you’ll want to add on the numbers you already know. For example:
👉 125 = cent vingt-cinq
👉 230 = deux cent trente
👉 867 = huit cent soixante-sept
This takes a lot of practice, but the methodology is quite simple. Take some time each day to go over these numbers and you’ll be mastering the French number system in no time!

French Numbers from 100 to 1 Million
Alright, we’ve learned how to count from 1-10 in French… and from 1-100 in French… then also from 100-1000 in French… but, now it’s time to learn how to count from 100 to one million in French!
Don’t worry, it isn’t too bad. Similar to the rest of the numbers, just practice and you’ll get it in no time!
So, we know that 100 is cent and that 1000 is mille… and one million is, million!
PHEW! They made it easy for us. Million is the same in English as it is in French. Very similar to how we used cent when we counted by one-hundred, we’re going to use mille to count by one-thousands.
For example:
👉 1000 = mille
👉 2000 = deux mille
👉 3000 = trois mille
👉 4000 = quatre mille
👉 5000 = cinq mille
👉 6000 = six mille
👉 7000 = sept mille
👉 8000 = huit mille
👉 9000 = neuf mille
👉 10,000 = dix mille
And if we jump ahead to even larger numbers:
👉 20,000 = vingt mille
👉 100,000 = cent mille
👉 550,000 = cinq cent cinquante mille
👉 1,000,000 = un million
If you want to make very large, but specific numbers, then you’ll simply use the stacking method like we did for numbers 1-10 in French.
For example, the number 550,350 is cinq cent cinquante mille trois cent cinquante.
550 = cinq cent cinquante
Thousand = mille
350 = trois cent cinquante
Simply, break down the number into parts then translate. This, again, takes practice, but with time and effort you’ll be speaking French numbers far beyond 1-10 in no time!

How to Say One in French: Un vs Une
Knowing when to say un versus une can be a bit tricky. After all, they both mean the number 1, so what is the difference anyway?
Well, the answer is one is masculine and one is feminine. Depending on the person or thing you are referring to, you will either use un if it is masculine or you will use une if it is feminine.
For example, if I were to say:
“She has one cat”
👉 The translation would be “Elle a un chat”. Since the word cat is masculine in French.
This would also be the same if I said “He has one cat” since we are referring to the cat, not the person.
Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing if a word is feminine or masculine just by looking at it on its own (except for a few cases), so you will need to memorize this for most vocabulary.
But, don’t worry! That comes much later. For now, let’s just focus on learning the French numbers 1-10.
What are the French Ordinal Numbers?
The French ordinal numbers correlate with how we say first, second, third, and so on in English. Thus, you get:
Premier or première for first
Deuxième for second
Troisième for third
Quatrième for fourth
Cinquième for fifth
How Do You Say 1-10 in English?

How to Count by 10’s in French
👉 20 = vingt
👉 30 = trente
👉 40 = quarante
👉 50 = cinquante
👉 60 = soixante
👉 70 = soixante-dix
👉 80 = quatre-vingts
👉 90 = quatre-vingt-dix
👉 100 = cent
You’ll notice that up to the number 69, all of the numbers follow the exact same pattern.
Simply say the plural form of the singular version of the numbers 1-10 in French (i.e. trois is trente when going from 3 to 30), then add on the singular form of the number afterward.
There are, however, exceptions. Once you hit the number 70, you’ll need to memorize the plural forms as they won’t be as obvious as the previous numbers.
The word for 70, soixante-dix, is created by adding together 60 + 10. The number 80, quatre vingts, is created by adding together 20 + 20 + 20 + 20.
The number 90, quatre-vingt-dix, is created by adding together 80 + 10. And lastly, the number 100, cent, is the first brand new word of the mix.
