Unfortunately, many people have lost their lives at the Cliffs of Moher due to unstable edges, tripping, etc.

If you decide to go over the stone wall that they have in place to prevent that, understand you are doing so at your own risk!

☘️ Be Prepared for Heavy Winds

Due to the unique location of the cliffs, it’s almost always windy here. Come prepared with a windbreaker and extra layers.

Even if it’s a balmy 70 degrees on the drive into the parking lot, once you get out on the cliffs, it’s usually significantly colder!

How To Get to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin

There are three ways to get from Dublin to the Cliffs of Moher:

☘️ You drive yourself

This is a viable option as long as you are comfortable with the driving conditions and you aren’t short on time.

Just keep in mind that the Irish drive from the right side of the car and on the left side of the road, so if you aren’t comfortable with this then I’d consider joining a guided tour instead.

☘️ A guided tour

This is the most recommended method of reaching the cliffs if you have other scheduled commitments (like a flight, perhaps) or aren’t comfortable traversing the Irish countryside on your own.

The roads are usually pretty well maintained, but after a rainstorm in particular, things can get a bit slick on those steep, muddy hills. Plus, many of them also include free cancellation in case you change your mind!

☘️ You can take the train, a local bus, and a cab to reach the cliffs

The Dublin to Cliffs of Moher bus is run by Dublin Coach which offers affordable transportation between Dublin City – Burgh Quay and Ennis, but you’ll need to book a second bus from Ennis to Liscannor on Bus Eireann or a similar local bus company.

The total Dublin to Cliffs of Moher bus price adds up to around 40 euros per person, roundtrip. Of course, this cost will vary depending on the time of year that you visit, etc.

This is a viable option, but you’ll have to arrange a cab to drop you off at the Cliffs of Moher Visitors Center and pick you back up and either bring you to your accommodation or the bus station which can be a little bit of a pain if you aren’t great with technology or you don’t have an international phone plan.

There aren’t dozens of taxis just lined up at the Cliffs of Moher waiting to bring people to the local bus or train station, so you may need to talk to someone inside the visitor’s center to arrange one to come and get you. Going from the Cliffs of Moher to Dublin is actually the trickier of transportation to arrange.

You need between 2-4 hours at the Cliffs of Moher to do the hike around the cliffs, take some awesome photos, and explore the Visitor’s Center, which is typically what most guided tours provide you.

However, if you end up visiting on a day with lots of rain or cloud cover, you may be left with little to no pictures or views of the cliffs.

This is why I typically say to set aside at least two days for the Cliffs of Moher, so you have a rain date for your tour if they have extra availability, if necessary.

While they are frequented by more and more tourists each year, they are nevertheless one of the best natural attractions in Ireland.

For the ultimate magical experience, pack yourself a picnic and walk down the path along the cliffs to where there are fewer tourists.
The whole journey will take you a couple of hours, not including eating time, but your efforts will be rewarded with uninterrupted views and a stunning backdrop!

You can easily do a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher from Dublin, even if you can’t stay the night or you have to return for an evening flight out of Dublin.

If you are tight on time and need to catch a flight, I highly recommend booking one of the tours above instead of trying to drive yourself, especially if you aren’t familiar with the driving conditions in Ireland.

In my opinion, the best time to visit the Cliffs of Moher is in the shoulder season months of April through May and September through October. Though the chances of rain will be higher, there will be far fewer people there and everything will be much less crowded.

If you’re hoping to visit the cliffs without thousands of other people, get up early and get to the cliffs around sunrise. Not only is this one of the most beautiful times to view the cliffs, but it’s also when there will be far fewer people.

The majority of tourists arrive between 9:30-11:00am and stay for at least a few hours, so anytime after 4-5:00pm is usually a good bet also.
