Lake Annecy, France: Ultimate 2026 First Timers Guide
As one of the largest lakes in France, Lake Annecy and the surrounding Haute-Savoie region is one of my favorite places in all of Europe! Think snow-capped mountains, charming villages, quaint shops and boutiques, and picturesque lakeside beaches.
With everything from hiking to paragliding for the adventure-seeker and boat rides to pristine villas for the luxury traveler, this Alpine region deserves recognition as one of the most beautiful destinations in Europe and therefore has been treated as such.
I’ve traveled extensively around the city and taken part in numerous adventures of my own, so I’m here to help ensure you have everything you need to plan an incredible visit.
Guidance on getting to Annecy based on your trip setup and current location, where to stay in the most popular towns surrounding the lake, tips on the best activities, a few local hikes, and some great day trips from Annecy are all included in this comprehensive guide!
Best Activities Near Lake Annecy
Whether you prefer basking in the sun with your toes in the sand or want to find the prime spot for the best views overlooking Lake Annecy and the surrounding Alps, these are some of the best things to do near Lake Annecy!
Hiking
When exploring this amazing region of Haute-Savoie, it’s important to remember to get an elevated perspective of the mountains and vast lake below. Hikes are a great way to do this for those seeking a bit of a challenge!
One of my favorite hikes that offers spectacular views of Lake Annecy and a roaring cliffside waterfall, the Cascade d’Angon, is located in the town of Talloires, just minutes from Hôtel Les Grillons.
The photo above was taken along the hike, where you’ll pass by several ominous mountains, through meadows of wildflowers, and up steep root-covered trails through the forest.
Trust me, your efforts will be rewarded after making this journey! The views of the surrounding region are absolutely breathtaking and can be reached in under an hour from Talloires by foot. This is a family-friendly hike with well-marked trails and consistent signs along the way.
To get there from Annecy, you’ll drive along Route D909 for about 13 kilometers until you reach Route des Vignes. This will take you up a short, private road where you’ll see signs for Parking d’Angon.
The parking here is free and there will be signs guiding you to the start of the trail. The total travel time from Annecy by car is about 25 minutes.
If you are taking the bus, you’ll be dropped off in the center of Talloires where you’ll need to walk for about 1.6-kilometers (about 20 minutes) along the lake until you reach the fork in the road, taking you up Route des Vignes.
For more challenging hikes, opt to take on the towering La Tournette, the Loop of Mont Veyrier, or the Roc de Chère Tour. These are all popular hikes near the town of Annecy that offer wonderful panoramic views of the valley and lake below.
Paragliding
Paragliding is one of the most popular extreme adventure sports in the French Alps. I went in Chamonix off the Mont Blanc Range, and it was the most incredible experience that I would surely do again. If you’re thinking of trying this, be sure to research where to stay in Chamonix before you go!
If you’re someone who seeks adventure on your travels, I am a huge advocate for paragliding. No free-falling involved and far more delicate landings than skydiving (I’ve done both so I can attest to this), this adventure activity may not be for the faint-hearted, but it can be accomplished by most.
If you decide to go paragliding in Chamonix, I highly recommend Absolute Chamonix. The multi-award-winning team, Caroline and Lionel, have over a dozen awards each in extreme paragliding and provided us with the safest experience possible.
They also offer optional add-ons including the opportunity to have a turn steering your own paraglide and mid-air acrobatics (not for people who get dizzy easily, though I found it exciting and unbelievably fun!)
Boating and Paddleboarding on Lake Annecy
Renting a boat and paddleboarding are two of the best ways to explore Lake Annecy France to the fullest! If you have a full day you can make your way over to the other villages (well, at least one or two of them) and stop off for a little while.
Annecy Boat Rental is a popular choice among tourists so the prices are slightly steep. Prices may also vary depending on the season, so be sure to shop around prior to the day you want to use a boat in order to lock in a good price.
Boats also get booked in advance, so if this is something you know you’ll want to do be sure to book ahead of time.
V-Boat offers paddleboard rentals as well as wake surfing and water skiing for people of all skill levels. If you’re looking for a day out on the water, these folks have you covered!
Lake Annecy Beach Day
Annecy and its surrounding towns offer spectacular beaches for sunbathing and watersports.
If you’re simply looking to lay out a towel and have some snacks with your toes in the sand, head to Plage des Marquisats near downtown Annecy, Plage d’Angon near Talloires, or Plage Municipale near Sévrier.
The crystal clear Lake Annecy is safe for swimming and has an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius in the summer (about 73 degrees Fahrenheit), so grab your sunscreen and be sure to include a beach day in your Lake Annecy itinerary!
So, to answer your question, “can you swim in Lake Annecy?“, the answer is yes!
Tour du Lac d’Annecy
Not exactly for people looking for a leisurely bike ride, this route follows the edge of the lake in its entirety, creating a 40-kilometer long bicycle route offering amazing scenery and plenty of opportunities for a refreshing swim.
The route will take you through the towns of Talloires, Doussard, and St-Jorioz, and is recommended to be done clockwise.
This route can be completed in one day, but it shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are some rolling hills and the distance is rather significant.
But, if you’re up for the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views and the opportunity to explore several towns on Lake Annecy.
Of course, you are welcome to bike to one of the towns then return, but I suggest mapping out your route before you get started… it may be longer than you think!
I don’t suggest attempting to walk around Lake Annecy, especially during the hot summer, since you’ll need to ensure you have enough food and water to keep you hydrated, and you’ll need to plan for about 2.5 hours of walking if you are heading in the direction of Talloires.
Explore Annecy’s Market
Just set back from the shores of Lake Annecy in the downtown area, visitors can find the plentiful outdoor street market of Annecy.
Overflowing with local produce, meats, cheeses, whole fish, and tasty sweets, this market is a great way to spend a morning exploring this charming town.
Be sure to check out the freshly made macarons and sample the cheeses specific to this region of France! There is no better place to try these tasty treats than in the heart of the Alpine region.

How To Get To Lake Annecy
Lake Annecy By Air
From Lyon
Flying into Lyon can be a great option for those coming from nearby Paris or for people looking to explore the Lyon region prior to departing for Annecy. Though if you’re already in France, I suggest traveling by rail outlined in the section below.
If you have the time, give yourself at least two days in Lyon (though, more is preferred) then take either a train or bus to Annecy. The bus will be slightly cheaper, but the train will be faster so it depends on how much of a time crunch or budget you are on.

From Geneva
This is my preferred method of traveling to the Annecy region of France. It’s about half the distance compared to traveling from Lyon and offers both private and public shuttles or buses to the region that can be booked months in advance.
Similar to Lyon, Geneva also acts as a great pitstop on the way to Lake Annecy France. Explore Lake Geneva and the surrounding town bustling with shops, bars, restaurants, and narrow cobblestoned streets filled with traditional European charm.
For the most time and cost-efficient method of getting to Annecy from outside of France or Europe, fly into Geneva, Switzerland no later than mid-afternoon. There are some fantastic views along the drive, so you’ll want to have some daylight left along the journey.
From here, book a bus or transfer to Annecy; most take about one hour of driving. There are several local companies that offer this, so just do a little research to find a good quote (quotes will vary by day of the week and season).
It’s as simple as that! You’ll be lounging on the shores of Lake Annecy within a few hours of landing in Geneva. There are plenty of accommodations located right near the lake as well as set back deeper in the nooks and crannies of the Old Town (outlined below).
When you go from Lake Annecy to Geneva, simply hop on the Regional Express Train from Gare d’Annecy and you’ll reach Geneva within 2.5 hours.
From U.K.
If you want to visit Lake Annecy and you’re coming from the United Kingdom, that’s so exciting! It’s a long journey, but your efforts will certainly be rewarded.
My first suggestion is to fly from your closest international airport (i.e. London, Edinburgh, Belfast, etc.) to either Geneva, Switzerland or Lyon, France.
It’s a quicker journey coming from Geneva, but it isn’t always cheaper. Do some research before choosing which airport to fly into. We use Expedia to compare prices for different airports and dates!
From there, follow the same directions as listed above for either Geneva or Lyon.
Lake Annecy By Rail
The Eurail is an exceptional way to travel around Europe with its hundreds of interconnecting railways and affordable multi-country passes.
If you plan on traveling to Lake Annecy via the railway system and are already in Europe, I highly suggest booking a ticket on Eurail for a leisurely travel experience. They offer different class seats and extra space for travelers and their luggage. Tickets typically go on sale 90 days prior to departure, so book early for the best prices.
Eurail also offers several different kinds of passes to fit your needs!
Are you looking to explore the quaint villages and exciting cities of France all in one trip? Then the one-country pass is the right choice for you! This pass allows you unlimited access to high-speed trains for up to 8 days within one month at a far more affordable cost than booking individual trains (prices start at €67).
This pass is available for many popular European countries and gives youth discounts to anyone under 28 years old.
Eurail also released its coveted Global Pass which gives you access to over 40,000 destinations across 33 countries in Europe for as little as €185. Coming from a frequent European explorer, the Eurail is the simplest and most cost-efficient way of getting to your destination (especially if it’s Annecy!)
To book your train ticket, simply go to the link below and enter your departing location, put Annecy as the destination, your date of travel, if you’ll need a return ticket or not, and how many people you’ll be traveling with.
You’ll then get a list of results showing all of the available departure times and the number of stops (if applicable) on each route. Make a selection and book! Say goodbye to the stress of not knowing how you’ll get to your next destination because Eurail has you covered.

How To Get Around Lake Annecy
By Foot
Lake Annecy town is nestled between several charming villages, all worthy of at least a day’s visit. The best way to really immerse yourself in the streets of these villages is to stroll through every nook and cranny hidden away by the quaint houses and lovely boutiques.
In my travels across Europe, I have found this is the best way to truly come to understand a culture. Walk through the stores, people-watch by the restaurants, and gaze at the beauty each city, town, and village has to offer.
If this is your first time in France, be sure to spend at least one day getting lost in the city streets and stumbling upon secret gems hidden away from those moving too fast to notice them.
↪️ Pro Tip: This region of France is almost entirely made up of cobblestoned streets, so be sure to pack a good pair of walking shoes with extra support… your feet and ankles will thank you!
By Bike
Renting bikes is a fun and efficient way of seeing the most of this region of France. In fact, many visitors rent bikes simply to take part in the popular Tour du Lac route encompassing Lake Annecy.
There are several rental shops in downtown Annecy, but they become fewer and further between as you get closer to the smaller villages. Be sure to check out Bicycle Rental Annecy for affordable prices and good service!
But, as mentioned above, this should be more of a day adventure instead of your main mode of transportation. Be sure to slow down and really take in the scenery of this lovely region.
By Bus
Annecy has a great bus system that is well-coordinated with the surrounding villages offering multiple departures per day and easy bookings.
This is my most recommended method of exploring the nearby towns, but be sure to pay attention to which direction the buses are going. If you get on the wrong one, it could be a couple of hours until it returns back to the station for you to get on the right bus!
↪️ Pro Tip: Most (if not all) signs and departure and arrival boards will be in French. If you aren’t familiar with the French language, it’s not a bad idea to brush up on a few phrases just to make sure you get where you want to go!
By Car
If you ask a few locals whether or not you should rent a car in Annecy, you’ll probably get very mixed reviews. Why? Because Annecy and its surrounding villages are some of the most walkable towns in all of France! So, why would you need a car?
On the contrary, Annecy and its surrounding towns may be very walkable, but they cannot be easily reached by walking between them. Unless you have all day (and night) to walk from Annecy to Talloires, you’re going to need a ride in some form or another.
While I suggest getting on a bus, many people enjoy the freedom of having their own vehicle. Cars are a great way to ensure you’re on your own schedule and you have ample time in each location.
But, if you don’t want the responsibility of looking after a car in a foreign country or are seeking more budget-friendly options, then I highly suggest taking the bus.
Best Lake Annecy Hotels by Region
Whether you want to be in the center of all the action or you’re hoping to find your own little piece of hidden tranquility from the rest of the world, these are some of the best places to stay around Lake Annecy!
Downtown Annecy
If you’re looking to dive deep into the charm of Annecy and be right in the middle of all the bars, boutiques, restaurants, and activities, then you’ll want to stay downtown.
Accommodations range from budget hostels to upscale hotels offering everything from complimentary breakfasts to special rates on boat rentals, and more!
For the budget traveler, the Atipik Hôtel Alexandra is in the heart of downtown boasting a riverside location, quality rooms, and hospitable service for a great price in this otherwise expensive destination.
For the luxury traveler, the Impérial Palace will make you feel right at home. Offering sensational views that tower over Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains, this hotel provides an upscale experience to its visitors.
Sévrier
Known for its up-and-coming hotel scene and stunning Lake Annecy beach, Plage Municipale, Sévrier is one of the more popular villages perched on Lake Annecy.
In this lakeside town, you’ll largely find water sports and beach days to be the most prominent activities amongst its visitors. Paddleboarding, kayaking, waterskiing, and sailing are popular activities so be sure to bring your bathing suit!
For a budget-friendly option, I suggest staying at Hôtel Beauregard, a lovely hotel offering great views of the lake and access to fun activities and a fantastic restaurant.
For a more upscale experience, stay at the Black Bass Hotel, fully equipped with a large outdoor pool and lounging area, a spa, and an onsite full bar and restaurant to make you feel comfortable in your home away from home.
Duingt
The most popular accommodation among tourists in Duingt is the Le Clos Marcel, a 4-star hotel boasting an exceptional location on Lake Annecy and close proximity to Chateau de Duingt (shown above).
You’ll also find several apartments and private rooms available for rent in Duingt. For other activities in this town, opt to discover Les Roselières, a great observation deck for capturing picturesque photos of the surrounding landscape.
Duingt is a rather small town and can easily be explored in a day, but also offers the perfect escape from the busier city town of Annecy.
Talloires
Talloires was one of the most beautiful lakeside villages in Annecy I visited. This side of the lake offers incredible views of majestic mountain peaks and some great family-friendly hiking trails. I stayed at Hôtel Les Grillons, set just outside the center of the village.
I sincerely cannot recommend this hotel enough! Fine dining, a stunning pool, exceptional rooms, and hospitable service will welcome you here and all at an affordable price.
To truly immerse yourself in the peace and serenity of the French Alps, sit back and relax on the shores of Lake Annecy, then return to Hôtel Les Grillons for an exquisite meal and good company.
Airbnb in Annecy
Yes, even Annecy has Airbnb! But, when traveling in more remote areas, it isn’t always the best option. Of course, you can find some good options like this waterfront apartment, but it’s usually on the more rare occasion and it’s almost always going to be pretty expensive.
That’s not to put Airbnb down in any way, I literally use Airbnb every time I travel, but you should be open to other options, as well!

What is Lake Annecy Famous?
Annecy is famous for its fairytale appeal on the eastern borders of France, Switzerland, and Italy boasting romantic canals, a lovely lake, medieval history, and quaint shops and boutiques.
The region is well known for its local wine and cheese and is especially popular among tourists (though Bordeaux still remains the best).
When visiting, Annecy’s Old Town is a must-see! Follow the windy, cobblestoned streets all the way to the water’s edge where you can walk over the Pont des Amours, or the Love Bridge.
Legend says, that if you and your significant other kiss on the bridge, then you’ll be together forever.
From the bridge, make your way into the center of town where you’ll see the infamous Palais de l’Isle, a former prison turned art and history museum.
Even though decades have passed since its previous use, the castle still has a medieval and striking appearance that should not be missed when visiting Annecy. It’s also a great place to pick up some unique souvenirs from France!
Is Lake Annecy Worth Visiting?
Lake Annecy is absolutely worth visiting. It has so much to offer its visitors from excellent cuisine and unparalleled views to adrenaline-rushing activities like paragliding and speed boating!
Annecy is not a massive town, so you’ll be able to see and do a lot in a short amount of time. This makes it easy to get around even if you only have one day to spend in Annecy.
Whether you have an entire week to spare and want to spend a few days wandering around the lake or you are simply passing through on your way to Chamonix, Lake Annecy is definitely worth visiting.
What is Lake Annecy France Weather Like?
The weather on Lake Annecy varies by season and time of day, but not by as much as you would think.
Owing to its location nestled in the French Alps, even in the summer months you can experience windows of colder weather and snow capped mountains will always be visible in the distance.
It can be quite rainy in Annecy, as well, with October being the rainiest month. In the winter, you will be sure to experience at least some snowfall as the average number of snow days is around 32 per year.
In the summer months of June through August, you will get treated to many beautiful hot and sunny days, but don’t be surprised if the temperatures dip into the 50s once the sun goes down.
It can get rather chilly at night which brings down the average temperature of Lake Annecy, as well. If you’re hoping to get the nicest weather, then a visit to Annecy in the summer months is your best bet.
But, if you want to avoid the crowds, then consider visiting in May when the crowds haven’t fully arrived and the weather is simply beautiful!
What Altitude is Annecy at?
Annecy’s altitude rests around 1,457 feet according to the Worldwide Elevation Map Finder.
This isn’t exceedingly high, especially since the nearby mountains boast far higher elevations, but Lake Annecy is still considered a perialpine lake owing to its location within the Alps.
Is Lake Annecy Expensive?
In short, yes, the Lake Annecy region is expensive to visit. Annecy is a popular tourist destination in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, making it a special place to visit.
You can expect higher food and accommodation prices here in comparison to the smaller towns of France, but there are some great ways to cut back on costs.
If you wish to travel in peak season when the weather is the best, then be sure to book your hotels well in advance. You can also opt to stay in hotels outside of downtown Annecy for significantly cheaper, while still being in close proximity to the lake.
For food, you can opt to shop at the local market or buy fresh foods from the weekly outdoor market that I talked about above. Eating out in Annecy is by far going to be one of your biggest costs, so this is an easy one to cut down on.
Lastly, since everything you’ll really want to do is going to be within walking or bus distance, don’t rent a car. Instead, hire a public chauffeur (public meaning it would be a shared ride with other travelers – I did this and it was fantastic!)
We met some very nice people from the U.K. and would gladly do it again) to get you to and from the airport. This will save you hundreds of dollars!
Lake Annecy can absolutely be visited on a budget and I highly suggest that you do! Just be sure to book in advance and be mindful of your spending, and you are sure to have a fantastic time while saving money.
How Many Days Do You Need in Annecy?
While most would prefer to spend at least one week in this lovely town, about 3 or 4 days will do just fine.
If you don’t plan to hike, then it will be quite easy for you to walk through the stores, eat some cheese, visit the market, take a bus over to the other towns for a few hours, and spend some time at the Lake Annecy beach.
Lake Annecy and the surrounding region is extremely tourist-friendly, so you’ll be able to fit a lot into a single day.
Does Lake Annecy Have an Airport?
No, Lake Annecy does not have its own airport. If you are looking to fly as close to Annecy as possible, your best options are Chambéry Airport near Chambéry, Lyon International Airport, and Geneva International Airport.
The closest option is Chambéry, however, prices will likely be far cheaper if you fly into Lyon or Geneva. I was able to score direct flights to Geneva from Boston for just $170, so I’d start by checking there!
Does Lake Annecy Freeze Over?
While it doesn’t happen every year due to varying temperature shifts, Lake Annecy does mostly freeze each winter season.
They actually hold what’s known as the GlaGla Race each year which is a stand-up-paddleboard contest! It isn’t operating in 2025, but is set to begin again on January 17, 2026.
How Long is Lake Annecy in Miles?
Lake Annecy is about 9.1 miles long (about 14.6 kilometers).
Can You Swim in Lake Annecy France?
You can absolutely go swimming in Lake Annecy, France! The water is exceptionally clean and clear, and in the heat of summer, water temperatures often reach up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius!)
There are many lakeside beaches popular for swimming, paddling, and boating, so you’ll always see a lot of people enjoying the lake in the warm summer months.
Why is Lake Annecy So Clean?
In the 1950s-1960s, Lake Annecy was actually used as a dumping ground for sewage by the nearby towns and villages, making it completely untouchable to people.
Since then, the Haute-Savoie region decided to completely transform the lake into a usable paradise and have sustained extremely strict cleaning regulations over the decades!
Lake Annecy is now known as one of the cleanest lakes in Europe and many beach-goers enjoy its pure waters every summer.
